The Benefits of Online Tuition

The Benefits of Online Tuition Here at Tutorfair, we are seeing more lessons than ever before taking place online - making up to 50% of Tutorfair lessons, on some days! For some clients and tutors, online tuition can seem like a strange method of teaching at first. We asked one of our top tutors, Jim R, to share his experience tutoring online... I’ve been working as a tutor for TutorFair for around five years and   recently completed teacher training. I was lucky enough to be employed, after a rewarding PGCE year in London state schools, by Wellington College â€" one of the UK’s leading independent boarding schools. My wife and I had to relocate to Crowthorne, which was exciting in one sense as we were beginning a new rural chapter in an idyllic setting within a rich academic community. In another, it felt a shame as I would no longer be able to tutor in person.  I loved my time as an ‘on call’ tutor in London and I was apprehensive about the effectiveness of online communication as a means through which to tutor English lessons â€" how would I build rapport? How would I use educational resources imaginatively and interactively? Would it feel too clinical, impersonal, detached? I have since found online tutoring to be equally â€" if not more â€" effective. As far as building a warm and constructive relationship with tutees go, I feel there’s an advantage to having the session ‘broadcast’ as it can lend a more performative element to the job. While there can be no substitute for hard work to progress tutees, being able to make your tutees laugh can be transformative as far as learning goes, and the fact the session is framed by a face in close up does appeal to tutees and tutors (like this one) who aren’t strangers to an opportunity for judiciously timed silliness. There has been no change to the effective use of resources; in fact, it’s more straightforward if the internet is a mid-session click away. I can ask parents to email me teacher instructions well ahead of the session if there’s specific school-work that they would like covered, but I can also email specific texts or exercises with a week’s (or more) notice to mums and dads so tutees have hard copies ready well in advance, should this be necessary. Saying this, printing can be done away with entirely if the online session is run through Google Hangouts â€" the screen can be shared, meaning homework or resources can be worked on collaboratively without recourse to hard copies. Online tuition suits busy parents better as their time commitment is far reduced as disruption to family life is minimised. There’s no letting me in, finding a space, letting me out. I can email feedback and take up only as much time as the session demands. There’s also peace of mind as parents can see exactly how many minutes I’ve spent online. The session is pure tuition, small talk is reduced and, as a consequence, there is value for money. Of course none of this precludes lengthy conversations with parents if they are needed. Another major bonus of this form of tutoring is that it’s possible to be anywhere in the world and still receive tuition. I have worked with many families who value consistency and routine in their child’s education and who prefer to keep tuition ticking over during longer holidays or where it’s necessary to re-locate for a time. I worked with an American family who were on a tour of the world together for a year, they kept up tuition in creative writing with their two boys throughout the trip. Needless to say I was often struck by the curious locations the boys Skyped from â€" jungles, beaches and â€" perhaps most unusually â€" the Arctic circle! If you’re considering online tuition, but are yet undecided, I would be happy to chat to you about the process. What an age to be alive! Jim R  is one of our top  English tutors. As well as being a fantastic private tutor, Jim is a  fully qualified teacher at Wellington College, one of the UK's leading public schools. My Volunteering Experience at St. Aloysius College

My Volunteering Experience at St. Aloysius College On Thursday 2nd July, less than a week after signing up with Tutorfair, I was given my first volunteering task - a UCAS (Undergraduate Courses at University and College) talk at St. Aloysius College in North London. Public speaking is not one of my (many) talents, so I was a little apprehensive when confronted with a classroom full of 30 energetic Year 12 students and only one other volunteer helper, Rosa. However, once I'd introduced myself, the questions about university were fired so frequently I forgot to be nervous! To make things more manageable, we split the students into two groups. This ensured myself and Rosa were able to get to know the pupils and really provide in depth answers to their many questions, which encompassed all aspects of university life, from living at home or on campus, to how different university teaching is from school teaching. Here, I spoke about my wonderful time at LSE as a student who commutes to save money and how difficult I found the transition to university, where studying is far more independent than at school. After twenty minutes I swapped groups with Rosa and was met with the same enthusiasm from the second batch of students who were particularly interested in advice on writing personal statements, which they would be drafting the very next day at school. I gave them the only piece of advice I found valuable from my own school time: write with enough passion to remind the admissions professors why they chose to study that same discipline all those years ago. It was such a pleasure to work with the students at St. Aloysius and provide some answers to the exact same queries I had before going to university three years ago. All in all, it was an afternoon well spent and I'd recommend volunteering with Tutorfair to everyone!

Growing scarcity of older Teachers in Schools - Tutor Hunt Blog

Growing scarcity of older Teachers in Schools Growing scarcity of older Teachers in Schools Growing scarcity of older Teachers in SchoolsSchoolsI was a school pupil back in the 70`s and 80`s, and I remember many of my teachers being of somewhat `advanced` years. Of course to a child or even a teenager anyone over the age of 35 may often, somewhat condescendingly, classed as over the hill - but having perused some old school photographs the average age of my teachers does seem to have been around 40. These days it seems to be increasing rare to find a school with an abundance of older teachers. Whenever I visit my son`s secondary school I`m shocked at how young all the teachers are, with even the head teacher looking like he`s only just turned 30. Some people are calling the lack of experienced older teachers an `experience black hole` - indeed it is concerning that so many schools are missing out of teachers who will possess a wealth of experience. I was a teacher myself for more than 25 years, and I can say with certainty that there`s a skill set that only comes with having taught hundreds of classes. Teaching itself is almost like an art form - somewhat ironically perhaps one that cannot be `taught.` I can testify to there being much truth in the old maxim: the teacher learns as much as the pupil. A good teacher will be constantly developing, learning new ways to present a set of concepts, putting a new perspective on certain ideas, all with the aim of getting pupils to see things from a different point of view. The problem is of course money - teachers are all on a pay scale, and the longer they have been in the profession, the higher their salary. Why would a head teacher, with an ever shrinking yearly budget, choose to employ an older teacher, when they could select a newly qualified teacher for a fraction of the cost? The disparity of income between a new teacher, and someone who has been in the profession for a decade or more could certainly be as much as £20,000. With the country still in the grip of austerity, and with pay freezes and cuts to a whole range of public sector jobs, it is unlikely that the situation is going to change any time soon. The whole school system is still suffering from a recruitment crisis, with nearly a quarter of the teachers who have qualified since 2011 already having left the profession. It certainly can`t be good for pupils to have teachers leaving midway through their GCSE`s or A-Levels, but that is exactly what is happening in many schools across the country. If we look at this situation from a purely capitalistic point of view, things can actually become a lot clearer. Because of austerity schools have less income, so they are obliged to keep labor costs down - it will then be an obvious choice to employ 3 newly qualified teachers instead of 2 more experienced teachers. Looking at it this way things make more sense - but schools don`t fit the capitalist model: classrooms aren`t factories, teachers aren`t creating commercial products, or providing a direct service to the paying public. Schools, teachers, and pupils are outside the capitalist model, because they are creating the next generation of workers who will, years down the line, find their place in society. If governments try to force a capitalist model onto the education system, using incongruous concepts such as `increased efficacy` and `greater productivity,` they will only be building up problems for the future. 10 months ago0Add a Comment

How to Get Ahead in School Over Thanksgiving Break!

How to Get Ahead in School Over Thanksgiving Break! Tips from a Private Irvine Tutor: Getting Ahead in School Over Thanksgiving Break! Tips from a Private Irvine Tutor: Getting Ahead in School Over Thanksgiving Break! Fall break is coming up, whether you or your student is in elementary, middle, high school, or college.   Breaks usually range from just an extra day off up to a week of vacation time.   Coming around a month before the end of the semester, this break is an ideal time to make sure your grades and progress are exactly where you want them to be.   If they aren’t, then use this time to bring them up.   If they are, then you can still use this time to remain proactive and stay ahead of your classes end the semester strong with the help of a private Irvine academic tutor. Let’s start with if your grades need improvement.   Maybe you started out strong but lost focus at some point, maybe you’ve been struggling from the beginning of the year, or maybe you feel like you understand the material but your grades don’t reflect that.   These can all be remedied over the break if you are simply willing to make the effort.   If you do have a grade that you are proud of, but are worried about the future, you can still benefit from work over the break.   Maybe you have an A in your class but are worried about the final, maybe you have good grades so far but don’t understand what you’re learning, or maybe there is an AP test in your future that you want to do well on.   Regardless of your situation, here are the methods you should try: 1. Talk with (or email) your teacher before the break. Your teacher knows your grade and the factors that led to it.   Your teacher is also the number one expert on their class and how to get an A.   Before you leave for break, visit your teacher or send a message that includes these talking points: what your grade is now and where you would like it to be, what factors specifically are bringing your grade down (tests, homework, participation, etc.), any possible extra credit opportunities, and what they recommend studying or working on over the break.   If you have a helpful teacher, their knowledge can help guide your fall break to get you on track for a better grade. 2. Get ahead! Do you have a project due in a few weeks?   What about a test that isn’t until after break?   A final that you know is looming in the distance?   Work on them over your break.   Even if it just means typing a few sentences for your final paper, saving a mostly empty PowerPoint for your project, or only making a dozen flash cards to study for your final.   Do a little bit each day and you’ll be shocked at the stress it relieves knowing that you have already begun this work.   It also gives you the opportunity to find thing that you don’t understand or don’t know how to do so you have plenty of time to ask for help. 3. Find a professional to help diagnose your current situation in your class and help you improve it and get ahead. An experienced tutor can help you find where you should be focusing in your class and help teach you to target any problem areas.   If you are struggling with the fundamentals from September, they can take the free time during the break to help you relearn and master these concepts.   If you’re mostly caught up, they can predict what you might be covering next so that you can learn it early and be confident when you go back to class.   If you need help studying, writing, or just comprehending what is going on in your class, a one-on-one tutor can devote individual time to you to help fix the problem while you still have free time during the break. Seeking help from the teacher is always a primary tool at your disposal.   However, we all know that this method simply is not effective with many teachers.   They might not have the time to help you individually, you might not find their help beneficial, or they might not be willing to help you.   Whether or not the teacher is able to assist, the key to having success in your class is doing the work, getting ahead, and seeking outside help if you need it.   If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed or overworked because of classes, take this opportunity during the break to prevent those feelings from happening again. Royal Tutor Manga - What You Should Know

Royal Tutor Manga - What You Should KnowRoyal Tutor Manga by Kumi Taniyama is one of the best things I have read recently. I've always found this kind of manga to be a bit difficult to swallow but I know now that it's quite alright. Not only was it an enjoyable read but it also provides a nice reading experience for all. You can find the first few chapters on a website I found online where you can read for free. The story revolves around the life of a twelve-year-old boy named Yuji who has just moved to Tokyo from Tokyo because his father went to work in the city. His younger sister Erii who is eight years old and his grandfather Taku who is already passed away move in with him. He also has a friend who visits him every day.The manga by Kumi Taniyama begins when he is very young, right after his birthday and begins from then on with various activities in the beginning like going to swimming pool with his friends and exercising, or playing soccer or a game of tennis. By the time he rea ches his ninth birthday, it's already the middle of summer. While enjoying his summer vacation, Yuji visits his uncle's house where he meets his new classmate in gym class that is Uroka Mikagami. After a second year in high school, Yuji goes to go study abroad in Singapore. While there, he is captured by a deadly psycho serial killer. With a mastermind who is a skilled assassin, he kidnaps a baby so he can use it as a host to control the people he wants to kill. However, when he tries to do so, he fails. After Yuji leaves for Singapore, he meets his girlfriend whom he had intended to marry when he is out of the country. He struggles with the problems of growing up and the school life that he ends up in. He ends up trying to get through school and gaining the popularity as a good student. He starts seeing a girl but he doesn't get the chance to confess until his two best friends Hachikuji Minori and Toshiko Yamaguchi meet in his class as well.Kumi Taniyama successfully uses his readers' imaginations in order to make this a very entertaining story. In the end, it ended up being not bad at all since it tells a good story about a common boy.
